Mutton Bustin' is one of the evening’s most popular events and offers youngsters between the ages of 5 and 8 a chance to begin their own rip-roaring rodeo careers. Each rodeo evening, 10 helmet-wearing cowpokes have an opportunity to ride a “wooley bulley” inside the rodeo arena. Here's how it works: With a sheep readied in the “chute”, a child is set on its back - arms wrapped tightly around the neck. When the chute gate opens out comes the sheep and rider. The small cowboy/cowgirl will hold on and ride the sheep for as long as they can! Whether it's a one second or ten second ride, these youngsters are in for a wild, exciting and memorable time. What fun!

The popular Mutton Bustin’ event occurs each night of the rodeo, July 8 – 13, 2014 and occurs as the 5th event, immediately following the Saddle Bronc riding. To be eligible, contestants must be 5-8 years old and weigh less than 55 lbs. on the date of the event. Due to limited time in the arena, only 10 contestants may participate each night. There are two ways to apply for a spot in the Mutton Bustin’ event:
(1) April Registration: Year 2014 application forms will be available on-line, midnight April 1. You MUST use the 2014 application form. Applications may be mailed, faxed or hand delivered as shown at the bottom of the application form. The first 5 names (for each evening selected) will be registered. . Applications will NOT be accepted before April 1.
Only 1 application per child. You may select up to 2 nights in order of preference; “1” being first preference, “2” being second. Do not select more than 2 nights. If you apply for more than one night and you are one of the first 5 registered you will be selected for that date only. A child cannot ride more than one night.
All applicants will be notified telling them if they are registered or not. SUBMITTING AN APPLICATION DOES NOT GUARANTEE YOUR CHILD IS REGISTERED. All successful registrants must check in at the Mutton Bustin’ booth BEFORE 7 pm on the night of the rodeo. Failure to do so will forfeit their slot.
(2) Rodeo Night Lottery Drawing: 5 slots will be drawn via a second lottery, held each night of the rodeo. Interested persons must sign up at the Mutton Bustin’ booth before 7 pm. Application forms will be available at the Mutton Bustin’ booth. The drawing occurs at 7:30. Applicants must check back at the Mutton Bustin’ booth no later than 8:00 to see if their name was drawn. Applications submitted for that evening’s performance that are not drawn will be discarded. If you would like to try for another evening you must sign up again by visiting the Mutton Bustin’ booth on the evening you’d like to ride.
♦ Substitute riders are not allowed.
♦ Please read the Contestant Rules and the 2014 Application and Waiver Form carefully (available online April 1).
♦ Application and Waiver form must be signed by a parent or legal guardian (available online April 1).
♦ If unsuccessful in the April registration, interested applicants may fill out an application each evening during rodeo week.
♦ All April registrants and rodeo night applicants MUST check in at the Mutton Bustin booth no later than 7 p.m.
♦ Contestants and family members must purchase tickets in order to attend the rodeo.
