Rodeo | Behind the Chutes | Team Penning 2008 Estes Park Team Penning The 2008 Estes Park Team Penning Event, sponsored by RMTPA(Rocky Mountain Team Penning Association), put on by the Top Hand Organization, and the Rooftop Rodeo Committee will be held on Saturday and Sunday, July 19th and 20th at the Stanley Park Fairgrounds. Team Penning dates back to the 1920's. It has grown into a highly competitive equine sport and has gained quite a reputation in the Rodeo world. The sport of Team Penning consists of three contestants on horseback competing as a team for the fastest time. The goal is to successfully sort three head of cattle out of a herd of 30, and then drive those three into a small pen at the opposite end of the arena. Each of the 30 cows has a number on their back. Three have the #0, three the #2 and so on, thru the #9. The cattle are "settled" in one gathered group at one end of the arena. When the cattle are ready, the announcer calls out a number between #0 and #9. The riders then cut out the three cows with that number from the herd without pulling any cows of another number over a "scratch" line - this would result in a disqualification. There is a 60-second time limit to "pen" as many of the three cows as possible. This process requires just the right combination of horses, riders, teamwork, and luck to get the job done in that one minute! The Estes Park Team Penning event will have 12 divisions that penners may enter. The divisions are categorized based on the individual's rank which is determined by points earned and previous win/loss records. The event is also open to novice riders as well as experienced professionals. This year's penning will also be a USTPA & NTPC affiliated sanctioned event that Gary Cleveland, a popular and well known local penner, has done a great job in promoting! This will bring in even more nationally ranked riders. Steve Wilson will also be participating! He and Gary, members of our Rooftop Rodeo Committee, were part of a 3-man team who won "1st Place" buckles in the National Cattlemen's Beef Association Calcutta during the National Western Stock Show in 2006! Spectators are promised an exciting look at some well-trained horses as they cut, turn, and maneuver cattle at full speed. The primary breed of horse chosen for Team Penning is the American Quarter horse known for their quick reflexes, athletic agility, and understanding of cattle. The winners are determined based on combined times and receive divided prize money and also championship belt buckles sponsored by local individuals and merchants! |
